Facilities Condition Assessment and Facilities Master Plan

Site Access and Safety

Secure entry and campus management.

Secure Campus Perimeter: Presently, several SCUSD campuses are not safe after hours used in an illicit manner causing consumption of Maintenance and Operations Resources to clean up outdoor spaces before the school day begins for safety and hygiene. The lack of a perimeter enclosure and multiple access points makes it hard to surveil. SCUSD will improve security at these campuses by using strategies such as perimeter (automated) enclosures; adding site lighting; keycard for access control; command centers; as and surveillance cameras not just for the campus but to surveil the streets the campuses front.

Welcoming: Admin entries will be re-imagined as Welcome Centers that server as a welcoming single point of entry once students are on campus with visitor management systems.  Visitor management has been problematic at many campuses and in many cases the root of the problem is caused by multiple access points and a lack of perimeter enclosure.  The Admin entry to many campuses is hard to find and not located in a way that it has "eyes on the street" for passive supervision of a campus main entry.

Arrival / Departure Experience: Many schools do not feel safe and have drop off zones that require extra staff to make them safe.  These campuses will be re-worked to create a safe arrival sequence that provides for multiple routes to school, encouraging walking and biking and safe drop off zones for cars and buses.

Zoning for Community Engagement: SCUSD campuses have afterhours use for the community, yet many have security loopholes and poor zoning that does not cordon off the rest of the campus from the zone being used. Strategies will include creating layers of zones of security and working with the community assets.
